Space in the Media

By December 2, 2016No Comments

It has been a good week for space themes in popular media.

This week’s episode 8 “Space Race” on NBC’s freshman drama Timeless revolves around the Apollo 11 landing, including computer Katherine Johnson as one of the heroes.

Hidden Figures, a movie specifically about African-American women who worked as computers for NASA, opens in theaters on 6 January 2017. According to Internet Movie Database, the film was shot in Atlanta.

National Geographic Channel is also running the space-themed series Mars. The show airs Mondays at 9 PM. There is plenty of online content at MakeMarsHome. On a certain level, National Geographic is running a sort of simulated Mars mission.

And if you have been following National Geographic Channel’s show Star Talk with Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, this week’s Season 3 Episode 10 installment features Apollo 11 astronaut and Mars booster Buzz Aldrin.

If you prefer radio, NPR station WABE ran a story today about Stephen C. Foster State Park the Okefenokee Swamp being named a Dark Sky Park. The park will be hosting a special astronomy day on Saturday 10 December 2016. If you have children who have never seen a proper night sky in all its glory, the next new moon is actually at the end of this month on the night of Wednesday 28 December into Thursday 29 December.

Space junkies, enjoy!
