January 2020 Dinner Meeting with David Piotrowski, Senior Principal Engineer, Delta Air Lines TechOps

Tuesday, Jan. 21st at Delray Diner
2475 Delk Rd, Marietta, GA 30067
770-485-8069

Our guest speaker is Mr. David Piotrowski, Senior Principal Engineer in the Enabling Technologies group at Delta Air Lines TechOps .

His responsibilities include innovation of inspection technologies, oversight of Delta’s internal NDT materials and processes, developing and implementing novel inspections to solve in-service problems, and assisting in Damage Tolerance Analyses and Failure Investigations. Prior to his 20 years at Delta, David worked at Pratt & Whitney for 4 ½ years in a similar capacity.

Health Management of aircraft, engines, and components is increasing with operators, OEMs, and MROs developing initiatives. Data can then be analyzed with predictive algorithms for recommended maintenance actions in order to improve reliability and mission readiness. Massive amounts of variables present complex issues: design, architectures, interoperability, validation & verification, implementation, and even Human Factors.

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) has even more challenges. These include regulatory, technical, procedural and financial. While SHM can be used as ‘alternate inspections’ to conventional Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), a philosophical change is needed to use SHM as part of a Condition Based Maintenance program. Therefore, SHM will involve progressive step-changes in the future.

This presentation will provide a vision of these changes and discuss several industry initiatives, including implementation of applications at Delta Air Lines. Additionally, this presentation will highlight the various aerospace industry standardization activities going on via SAE Committees, IATA and A4A Working Groups.

David was part of teams which were named the 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2014 FAA-A4A “Better Way Award” Winners for accomplishments in NDT. He was named to Delta’s prestigious “Chairman’s Club” in 2010.

He is currently vice-chairman of the SAE’s Aerospace Industry Steering Committee on Structural Health Monitoring (AISC-SHM) and serves on the Steering Group of Integrated Vehicular Health Monitoring (IVHM). He is a member of SAE’s Committee K, HM-1 Committee (Health Management), and the Commercial Aircraft Composite Repair Committee (CACRC). Previously he served 3 years as Chairman on A4A’s NDT Network.

He has Bachelor of Materials Engineering and Master of Metallurgy degrees from Georgia Tech, as well as an MBA in Aviation from Embry-Riddle. He is ASNT (American Society for Nondestructive Testing) Level III certified in Penetrant, Ultrasonics, and Eddy Current.
